Chalkidiki is a peninsula in the center of Macedonia with three smaller peninsulas: Cassandra, Sithonia and Athos. Because of its morphology, Chalkidiki is the prefecture with the longest coastline of continental Greece (500klm). Due to the absence of rivers, the sea around it is one of the clearest in Greece.
Recent excavations in the Petralona Cave prove that the first controlled fire was lit in Chalkidiki approximately 700.000 ago. By 4.000 BC, as proved by prehistoric settlements along the coastline, Chalkidiki was already a rich, highly populated region with a rich culture. Chalkidiki was colonized during the Trojan War era. Colonists came mostly from Chalkida and Eretria. Chalkidiki has been for many years the battlefield between Athenians and Spartans and as a result lots of cities were destroyed. At 168 BC Chalkidiki, as well as the rest of Macedonia, was occupied by Romans. Castles, towers and monasteries were built between the 9th and the 15th century on the agricultural land of Chalkidiki. At 1821 Chalkidiki took an active part in the Greek revolution. At the beginning of 21st century, it was one of the strongholds of resistance of the Macedonian conflict while a lot of its habitants participated at the forces of resistance of Pavlos Melas and the other Macedonian leaders. At 1922, thousands of refugees from Asia Minor, Thrace and Bulgaria have been settled there. Today Chalkidiki is considered a very popular holiday destination.
